ESOP Communication Committee Development
at Prentke Romich
Company
“We plan events but we see ourselves as much more than event
planners. We are the people who are responsible for sustaining our
great culture,” says Mary Bing the chair of the Prentke Romich ESOP
Communication Committee. “We established a committee because we
heard that successful ESOPs had someone to focus on ESOP
communication,” says Dave Moffat, President of Prentke Romich
Company in Wooster, OH (www.prentrom.com). In 2009, the committee
was honored with the Ohio ESOP Association chapter “Group Excellence
Award” for the wide range of activities including educational emails
and events.
In October 2008, the committee organized a very special
celebration to recognize our transition to 100% employee ownership.
The celebration included a champagne brunch and a recognition of the
important role that senior management has had in this transition and
our success. Following a “Super Hero” theme, each department
notified their manager 30 minutes before the celebration that they
would be dressing up in costumes selected by their staff. With
little hesitation, management donned their costumes, posed for
photos and made their way down the runway for all employees to see.
Mr. Incredible (our president) and ESOP Excelerator (VP of Finance)
presented what it means to be 100% employee owned for our company
and all employees. Mary Bing says, “this activity was a great
opportunity to get people involved who don’t normally volunteer and
for departments who don’t always work closely together to have more
interaction.”
Workplace Development is very proud to have provided committee
development and communication services to this ESOP communication
committee. We worked closely with the first committee chair, Nancy
Young, to launch this enduring and active committee. Nancy continues
to serve on the committee, assisting with activities and writing the
ESOP Eddie emails. Nancy was selected as the “2009 Employee Owner of
the Year” by the Ohio Chapter of the ESOP Association.
KAPCO is selected as
“The 2009 ESOP Company of the Year”
KAPCO -- a 100% ESOP-owned company headquartered in Brea, CA
(www.kapcousa.com) — was selected as “The ESOP Company of the Year”
by the ESOP Association. We congratulate all the employee owners of
KAPCO for winning this national honor. The company also won the AACE
Award (Annual Awards for Communications Excellence) for Printed
Materials in the category for over 250 employees. Workplace
Development is very proud to have served KAPCO by providing both
Supervisor Training and ESOP Committee Development. Our custom
Supervisor Training focused on understanding financial results,
building ESOP knowledge, dealing with people, and managing change in
an employee-owned company. The ESOP committee development services
built a plan of action (roadmap) for the committee and created
custom materials so they could answer their co-workers questions.
KAPCO leveraged Workplace Development’s services to achieve ESOP
communications excellence.
Business Simulation at Parametrix makes financial metrics meaningful
Outside observers might think that Parametrix had already reached
the pinnacle of ownership culture development. After all, it has
been employee owned since 1992 and has been a 100-percent
employee-owned firm for more than 10 years. (www.parametrix.com)
Company leaders know that sustaining and extending their ownership
culture doesn’t happen without effort -- it must be done
intentionally. They faced a challenge common to many mature ESOPs:
How do we make routine financial results more meaningful to everyone
– especially our newest employee owners? The challenge is not
unique, but the innovative solution we developed with Parametrix
last year is unlike any other.
In 2008 Parametrix launched “Business Owner Training” which is an
interactive experience that transfers the basic financial tools and
understanding each employee needs to be successful in this 100%
employee-owned company. This goal is accomplished through a fun
customized business simulation called “Circus Services.” The
participants learn basic financial analysis skills by practicing on
a simulated company that provides “pooper scooper and clowning
services.” Workplace Development brought over 15 years of business
simulation experience to our work on the project. In addition,
Workplace Development successfully transferred the delivery to a
Parametrix trainer.
We are very proud that Parametrix’s “Business Owners Training” was
nationally recognized in 2009 by winning the NCEO Employee Ownership
Innovation Award in Portland, Oregon and also won the Annual Award
for Communications Excellence (AACE) for Educational Materials in
Washington, DC. Click on this link
